Step 1: Download and Print the Free Pirate Hat Craft Template
Download the Free Printable Pirate Hat Template. The PDF file contains everything you need to make enough hats to outfit the whole crew.
Step 2: Decide if you will make the Print and Color Pirate Hat or the Construction Paper Hat.
The first step is to choose between a black & white hat to color or a construction paper hat template with printable skull & crossbones.
Both templates come in the free pirate hat PDF. If you plan to make the construction paper hat, move on to Step 3. Otherwise, skip to Step 4.
Step 3: Cut Out the Pirate Hat Craft Shapes
If you plan to use Black construction paper to make the pirate hat, you can quickly cut out a lot of hats at one time.
Print the Free Pirate Hat Template. Then staple it to colored paper and cut out as many shapes as you need.
If you want to make this craft with a group of kids, you can staple the template to up to 10 sheets of copy paper, 5 sheets of cardstock or 5-8 sheets of construction paper.
So, did you know, you can staple together 10 pieces of copy paper and cut out 10 shapes at a time?! That’s my SECRET to fast & easy crafting.
Stapling the paper is very important because it makes sure it doesn’t move as you cut. The more staples the better. Cardstock is the thickest so you may only be able to cut 5 sheets at a time.
Tip: While you’re cutting, if you cut off all parts of the pages that have staples, make sure to re-staple the sheets that are left.
Whenever you’re cutting multiple sheets at a time, make sure they are always stapled together!
Step 3: How to Assemble this Paper Pirate Hat Craft
The children will just need to put it all together and make it their own.
- Choose which hat you will make. If you’re choosing the print & color hat the first step is to color your pirate hat.
- Cut out the pieces of your hat on the dotted line – If you’re choosing the construction paper hat. Make sure you have all of the pieces: the main hat, a sizing strip of paper, and the skull & crossbones circle (optional)
- If you’re choosing the construction paper hat – color the skull & crossbones and glue it onto the main part of your hat.
- Staple the sizing strip to the side of the main hat shape.
- Measure the child’s head and staple the opposite side of the strip to the main part of the hat to fit the child’s head. Don’t forget to write you’re name on the back.
